What it does

You write the group's message once, when you make the group. After that, the button sends it. There's nothing to compose and nothing to think of first.

One press goes to every other person in the group. You never pick who to include, so nobody gets left out by accident.

Sixty-eight emoji to pick from. Tapping one is a complete answer, enough to say you saw it without owing anyone a paragraph.

With one of sixty-eight emoji. The group's streak grows on any day somebody reached out, and you can see who did.
Why there isn't more to it
Long-distance group chats go quiet on their own. Everyone still cares. It's just that after a few months of silence, whatever you send starts to feel like it should be worth the wait, and a message that has to be worth something is a message you put off.
Headcount takes the writing out of it. The message is already written, an emoji is a complete reply, and so there is nothing left to put off. Press the button and the people you moved away from hear from you.
